The Effects of Abdominal Meridian Massage on the Degree of Constipation among the Patients with Immobility after Orthopedic Surgery

Abstract
Purpose: This study was to identify the effect of abdominal meridian massage on the degree of constipation of the patients with immobility after orthopedic surgery.

Method: This study was performed by non equivalent control group pretest-posttest non-synchronized design from September, 5 to November, 6, 2005. The subjects were composed of 20 in the experimental group(abdominal meridian massage), 20 in the control group 1(simple abdominal massage) and 20 in the control group 2(non treatment).
Result: There were significant differences in frequency of taking stool softener and degree of constipation by CAS(Constipation Assessment Scale) among 3 groups. But There was no significant difference in frequency of bowel movements among 3 groups.

Conclusion: The abdominal meridian massage for the patients with immobility may be an effective nursing intervention for management of constipation.
